T-Shirt Scarves: A DIY I Can Actually Do!

I’m not what you would call an artsy-crafty type of person. Crafty with words perhaps, but definitely not with things like paint, plaster, glass, glitter, glue, ribbon – you get it. Arts and crafts have never really been my thing and consequently never have DIY projects. Despite having tried numerous art projects and DIYs over the years, I’ve never-ever excelled beyond sucky. It’s really quite pathetic considering my mom’s a great artist and my dad makes surfboards. BUT, I’ve finally managed to execute a DIY project entirely on my own. (I usually require the immediate assistance of my BFF Anu, who has magical crafting hands – no joke) But BEHOLD the first DIY I can actually do – BY MYSELF:

Finally! A DIY I can ACTUALLY Freaking Do!

These scarves seem to be taking off in the Hawaii fashion scene thanks in part to Wanko Wanko and the numerous DIY blogs out there sharing tips and tricks on how to turn an old t-shirt into something fashionable. Here’s a quick visual step-by-step courtesy of HelloGiggles.

The scarves are actually the perfect answer to fashionable “winter” wear in Hawaii because they’re not too hot or bulky, but they still offer that sense of stylish coziness that comes with your favorite winter scarf. Plus, you can pretty much add anything from feathers, to broken earrings, gold chains and shells to your scarf depending on your mood. This was my first one, so I kept it simple and just doubled it up to add a slightly different look.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, I figured I’d share this video tutorial for those of you who want in in the secret:

So have at it my fashionably fierce frugal fiends – see if you can make yourself a T-Shirt scarf!

    • You should definitely try it! If I can do it, anyone can. They make great Christmas presents :)
Yes, I’m so fortunate to live in Hawaii, but sometimes I miss being in cooler weather. I went to college in the SF Bay area so nothing too cold, but just enough to bust out a nice coat and some boots!

      • I’ve been making several of these as gifts and enjoy making them…now I was born and raised on Kauai and moved away many years ago and miss the warm hawaiian breezes especially when it’s below 20 degrees out here in Ohio

  1. I had an old tee that is 100% cotton. I cut the bottom part in strips and tried to stretch them. They stretched but the didn’t get the spaghetti look you got. Do I have to use cotton/polyester?
Did this ever happen for You? Did I do something wrong? If you have any input I would really appreciate it. I think they are very neat. Thanks.

    • Hi Patti,
I’ve used 100% cotton and the cotton/poly, but I’ve never had any problems with getting the spaghetti look. Does your shirt have graphics? If there’s paint or any sort of stitching/embroidery, you won’t get the curl. Hope this helps! Aloha, Malia.

  3. I love this idea! I would like to know more about how you did the braid. What did you cut? If you cut it, it’s not a loop anymore! I’m a visual person and need to see it be done!

    Thanks
