Prabal Gurung for Target will Change Your Life

Target has done it yet again. And boy do I love them for it. This Sunday we can all open up our closets (and wallets) to welcome the much anticipated and totally AMAZING Prabal Gurung for Target collection. If you’re like me – a sucker for bright colors and patterns – then you will most certainly go into hysterics when you see what PG has to offer us fashion fiends. I honestly believe that the following content has the power to change your life or at the very least it’ll get you to clean out our closet to make space for a few slices of Gurung heaven ;) Exhibit A:

prabal-gurung-target-floral-blazerNow I know what you’re thinking – flower/color explosion! And guess what? I absolutely, totally, without a doubt in the world, LOVE IT! The colors are phenomenal and the delicate heels just make it that much better. Oh, oh, oh it’s magic! Here’s another one for your eager eyes…

prabal-gurung-target-blouse-skirt-yellow

Excuse me while I shed tears of pure joy. I mean it’s not everyday that you see such AMAZEBALL pieces at lustfully low prices. This outfit from head to toe – blouse, skirt, bangles, bag, earrings and heels – will cost you about $155, plus tax (sorry, hot model body not included). Now that’s what I’m talking about right there – a fully loaded outfit that can be broken up to make multiple drool-worthy looks. I’m in love. Ok, ok, let’s see another one :)

prabal-gurung-target-full-skirt-red-dress

How hot’s that Gu-Gu-Gurung? How hot’s that Gu-Gu-Gurung?

Seriously though, how hot’s that Gu-Gu-Gurung? Pretty freaking hot if you ask me! I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind wearing this sinfully delicious number for my Valentine’s Day date. Hell, even if I didn’t have a date, I’d rock this bad boy solo on V-Day because it’s just that good. And don’t even get me started on those lace up heels. DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED!

So here’s the deal. The collection launches this Sunday at Target, so you can bet that I’m making the sacrifice of all sacrifices (waking up early) to make sure I have first pickings of the Gurung goods.

Oh, just in case those little treasures I shared weren’t enough torture/pleasure, here are a few more for you drooling little fiends…

H&M in Hawaii?

Now before you go and clean out your closet to make room for a whole new wardrobe from H&M, please note that this is only an initial report based off of an article posted by Pacifc Business News. Nothing has been confirmed. I repeat. NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. It’s still very much in the he said, she said phase, but we do know that if it’s coming where they say it will, it’s gonna be in Waikiki.

That’s not to say that Hawaii fashion fiends don’t NEED an H&M, because WE DO! You know, like how Kate Middleton needs Prince William (so that she can be a princess – duh) and how Dolce needs Gabana. I mean quite honestly, the fact that we fellow fashion fiends have survived this long without an H&M (or Zara, Mango, Urban and the list goes on) in Hawaii is really quite baffling. One can only go so long without a proper H&M fix, you know? Especially when you’ve moved back home from San Francisco, which has oodles of H&Ms just oozing with to-die-for outfits. Really though, I’d go so far as to say that those of us fashion fiends in Hawaii have been the victims of some serious sartorial torture and IT MUST END! The massive Forever 21 in Waikiki and newly opened store in Ala Moana is proof that we need retailers that cater to the wants of the fashion forward fiends with meager amounts of moolah to spend. I mean I like Forever 21, but I LOVE H&M! Throw in the rest of the foreign retailers (plus Urban) and I’d probably pee my pants with excitement – yes, I just said that. I’m but a child in a 20 something’s body.

Anyhow, the day we’ve all been waiting for could soon be upon us. We can only hope that the fashion gods are on our side. So to appease them, let’s all rock our favorites from H&M to prove to them that we are worthy!

Now, I’m completely lacking in photos, but perhaps this one of my amazing BF and a my H&M bags will suffice for now.

Floral Friday!

Hawaii_Fashion_Topshop_Floral_Top_closeI’m not gonna lie – I’ve worn this floral shirt over and over and over again since I picked it up from the new Topshop Collection at Nordstrom. Which basically means one thing: I FREAKIN’ LOVE IT! It’s classy enough for work, but funky enough for play. And that’s huge considering I spend my days in an office and my nights out on the town! Ok, I don’t spend all my nights out at the bars, but I’ll most certainly take any chance I get to let loose and enjoy life (read: enjoy a vodka soda – or 2, ok 3). But now for the reason I’m writing…Happy Floral Friday!

Although I don’t look very happy in this photo, I can assure you, I’m loving the florals. It’s the person behind the camera lens (boyfriend) who was the cause of this “over it” face I’m making.

Hawaii_Fashion_Blogger_Topshop_Floral_Far

Hawaii_Topshop_Floral_Top_Bag_Fashion_BloggerRecognize that gold and jade ring? Or what about that black leather purse?

Topshop at Nordstrom Tops the Charts

Hawaii fashion fiends scored BIG TIME last week with the opening of Topshop at Nordstrom Ala Moana. And I’m not exaggerating – apparently only 14 Nordstrom stores in the entire nation have earned this great honor :) Yipee! #luckywelivehawaii (sorry, had to!)

topshop_nordstrom_hawaii_alamoana.JPGI had the great pleasure of checking out the fabulous new addition to Nordstrom, and let me tell you, it was a Fashiorgasmic…

topshop_hawaii_fashions.JPGMichelle, the department manager (aka luckiest girl alive), did me the favor of walking me through the three collections featured at Nordstrom.

The first collection is the Sensationalist and is sort of Rihanna-esque. Lots of leather, studs, bling and some fierce footwear. I obviously loved everything.

topshop_nordstrom_leather_jacket_studded.JPG

I’m diggin’ the white lacey look mixed with the badass biker chick.

topshop_nordstrom_honolulu_sensationalist.JPG

Stud city chick, stud-stud city chick, black booties, black clutches on them Topshop chicks…(ok, I’ll stop)

The second collection is Pennsylvania, mixing florals and denim with camoflouge and a few studs here and there. These looks were sort of, I’m-a-girl-but-I’m-also-a-hard-ass-so-move-aside-esque.

topshop_nordstrom_manequins.JPGtopshop_nordstrom_army_stud.JPGtopshop_nordstrom_army.JPGThe last collection is Factory Girl and was my probably my favorite for two reasons: 1) The pieces are very, very Mad Men-esque (and I’m obsessed with Mad Men); 2) The pieces work well for the office, but can easily translate over to a night out.

topshop_nordstrom_honolulu_factory_girl.JPG

This green dress will make you look and feel like a Chanel girl without the hefty price tag!

topshop_nordstrom_hawaii_manequins.JPG

I’m Factory and I know it, know it, know it…

Being that I was immediately obsessed with EVERYTHING (I’m not exaggerating), I had to try it all on. Ok, not all, but quite a bit!

topshop_nordstrom_hawaii_dressing_room.JPG

A glimpse into my first round dressing room…and a special thanks to Michelle, Jackie and the rest of the department associates who helped me!

Although I would have loved to buy EVERYTHING, I didn’t because – NEWSFLASH – Topshop is here forever! I went for a couple of key pieces that I can get ample use out of. Plus, this is only the beginning. I’m sure they’ll have entirely new and equally as to-die-for pieces by this weekend.

Stay tuned for an upcoming post to find out what I ended up picking out for myself :)

And in case you’re wondering, the price points are amazing, especially on the denim!

My only gripe – the sizing is UK based, so swallow your pride and go up one or two sizes. But trust me, once you find the right fit, you’ll forget all about the fact that you’re not a size 4, because you’ll look amaze. I swear.

Aloha. {Ps. scroll down for more pics}

DIY: Distressed Denim Shorts

Summer is here and that means it’s time to hit the beach in your skimpiest bikini and shortest shorts! Oh wait, I live in Hawaii which means I hit the beach all-year-round. For those of you living in a land that endures those other cold, grey seasons, go ahead and virtually slap me for rubbing it your face that I live in an endless summer.

*slap*

*ouch*

Now on to the good stuff.

Summertime means summer fashion fun and this summer’s all about the distressed, destroyed denim. And what better way to jump on the summer fashion bandwagon than to fully immerse oneself into the exhilarating art form of thrifting, cutting, sanding, bleaching, washing and gluing a pair of old Levi’s? After a weekend learning the dirty deed with my crafty, creative and all around arterific (let’s just pretend that’s a real word) BFF @anunaks, I decided to take on the task alone. As I’ve shared in my previous T-Shirt scarf post, I’m not a crafty person, so this was a HUGE project for me – really, it was! And here’s how it went…

Step 1 & 2: Go through our closet or meander through your local thrift store for a pair of jeans or shorts. I went the thrift store route because I was looking for some higher – but not too high – waist shorts. I ended up finding jeans, which meant I had to cut them. Exhibit A:

diy_destroyed_denim_shorts

I really broke the bank on these ones: $8!

Step 3: Once the shorts were cut to my desired length, or rather lack of length (I’m such a hooch. I cut them short, then shorter, then a leeeeettle bit shorter), it’s time to distress them a bit to get that iconic Abercrombie & Fitch look – aka I’m so cool I choose to buy $100 pants with holes. I used heavy grit sandpaper, but you can also use a razor or scissors. You basically need to work the denim just enough to thin out some of the threads. Exhibit B:

distressed_denim_shorts

Sandpaper and some old fashioned elbow grease are all you need!

Step 4: Reach for the bleach beezy because this is the fun part! You should also have some gloves on hand or at least plastic bags to help protect your precious claws. I used a bucket, but i think it’d be easier to use a tray like the ones used for paint rollers. I opted not to dilute my bleach with water because I’m so hard core – NOT! But seriously, I just poured a nice amount of bleach into the bucket and hoped for the best. Exhibit C:

diy_bleached_denim_shorts

Let the transformation begin!

Step 5: Here’s an easy one…LET SOAK!

Step 6: Remove your bleached denim and toss them in the wash (with nothing else unless you want to buy a whole new wardrobe).

Step 7: Once your shorts are finished washing and drying, you can add some finishing touches. I kept it pretty simple by adding a reverse jean patch with some fabric glue (maybe it’s because went overboard on the sandpaper and elbow grease, thus requiring a fix-it). The real pros add lace accents, studs and adorable printed material. Check out my girl @heenz at Cross My Heart Denim for her amazing mini diva distressed denim and you’ll know what I mean about the pros and their cute accents.

Step 8: Wear the damn things woman!

So have at it my fashionable friends! Make some distressed denim for your damn derriere :)

I Shopped Jason Wu For Target

That’s right, I woke up at the crack of dawn. Picked up my BFF Anu. And headed out to Target Kapolei to test my luck among the other crazies fiending for their share of the AMAZEBALLS Jason Wu for Target Collection! Here’s the 411:

I was lacking a good night’s rest because I was chaperoning teenagers until the wee hours (oh how I forgot the ridiculous levels of energy that 4 four – yes, 4 – teenager girls have). But I survived. And so did my closet after I let them raid it for items I could live without. So, after finally getting to bed around 1:30 am, you can imagine I wasn’t too thrilled about the 6:30 am wake up call I received from my BFF Lauren, making the most bizarre claim I’ve ever heard, “Malia, get up! Wika went to the zoo! It was $800, but he’s safe.” EXCEPT, it was 6:30 am on a Sunday and I was dead tired and clearly not in a fashionable state of mind. What she really said: “Malia, get up! Wika (her BF who lives in San Diego) went to Target and it was a zoo. He spent $800. He got everything just to be safe.”

Well, of course that’s what she said. Fast forward…..get up, brush teeth, wash face, get dressed, get in car, drive, pick up Anu, drive, get coffee, drive, arrive at Target…

As I turned into the parking lot, I immediately spotted Lauren’s car and pulled up alongside her (with my game face on). We simultaneously rolled down our windows, not to say good morning, but to rejoice, “NICE – we’re the first ones here!” (BTW: anyone not keen on what happened with Missoni for Target and thus the significance of arriving first, should read up here.) Lauren, Anu, myself and Lauren’s Dad, Uncle Jer-Bear, (I’ve already nominated him for uncle/dad of the year. I know you were about to tell me to send in his name) stayed in our cars watching cautiously for any “threats”. Of course once we saw the first woman plop down at one of the iconic red Target balls, we knew it was time – game on beezies.

Lauren and Anu claiming their place in line...at 7:30 am!

First of all, it wasn’t a Zoo. BUT, I can assure you that the 30 or so fiends standing in line were more than enough to clean out the 3-rack Jason Wu for Target section in minutes. Between the three of us girls, we snagged up about 25-30 pieces and bolted to the fitting rooms.

Jason-Wu-Target-Blue-Polka-Dot-Top

Fitting room pic!

I ended up with a handful of ADORABLE items including four tops and two dresses. Lauren and Anu also walked away with oodles of cute Michelle Obama-esque dresses, skirts and tops. Unfortunately none of us managed to score any of the purses. BUT, it’s ok because Wika (the one who went to the Zoo and spent $800) managed to do that for us before we even woke up. Wika, I never thought I’d say this, but, YOU ARE THE MAN.

More photos to come of the items I scored. In the meantime, why don’t you drool over Wika’s $800 Zoo bill.

Yes, Wika. Yes. #drooling

Jason Wu For Target (Caution: Extremely Drool-Worthy Content)

Wuuuu freaking huuuuuu! Jason Wu for Target is finally here – well, sort of. It’s just the look book (keep reading to find out when the collection hits stores), but it’s definitely enough to get me salivating over the uber cute dresses, tops, skirts and more that make up Wu’s to-die-for affordable collection for the Target. I mean c’mon, what don’t you NEED about this adorable outfit?

Jason-Wu-Target-Yellow-Top-Black-Skirt

What’s that song? “Black and yellow, black and yellow, black and yellow…” I’ll take it all!

Amazeballs right? And the best part is that his collection is priced between $19.99 and $59.99. Let’s keep in mind however that Hawaii is practically Mars, so shipping costs usually up our prices by $10, sometimes $20 bones (lamesauce). But considering the fact that an original Wu can set you back a couple G’s, the price difference is a cup-of-tea. And I love a nice tea, especially if I have a nice tea dress…

Jason-Wu-Target-Blue-Orange-Striped-Dress

Perfect for that Cup-Of-Tea!

But what about for after tea? You know, like when you have a movie date and you need a super cutey and comfy top? Well, duh…

Jason-Wu-Target-Striped-Top-Shorts

If you’re wearing this top, you’re pretty much instantly the most stylish, coolest, hippest, cutest person in the room.

Wow Wu, you’re good (does anyone else find the phrase, “wow, Wu” funny?). How about an outfit for my bi-monthly bitches who brunch followed by an afternoon at the mall? Whatda ya know…

Jason-Wu-Target-Floral-Dress

Who knew floral could look so edgy!

So basically Mr. Wu has it covered. I bet he’s a ninja too. At the very minimum it’s safe to say he’s a fashion-ninja, creating these gorg pieces for great prices. Seriously though, you could buy the entire Jason Wu for Target collection for less than the price of one piece in the Jason Wu Spring 2012 Collection.

FYI, the collection will land in Target stores on February 5th and if it’s anything like the Missoni for Target frenzy, it’ll be sold out (and listed on eBay) before you finish your morning latte. What does that mean? Come Sunday, February 5th, skip the caffeine and head straight to the nearest Target if you want to get you fashionable hands on some of these goods.

Ok, enough jibber-jabber. Let’s get to business and take a look at the rest of the AMAZEBALL pieces from the Jason Wu for Target collection…

T-Shirt Scarves: A DIY I Can Actually Do!

I’m not what you would call an artsy-crafty type of person. Crafty with words perhaps, but definitely not with things like paint, plaster, glass, glitter, glue, ribbon – you get it. Arts and crafts have never really been my thing and consequently never have DIY projects. Despite having tried numerous art projects and DIYs over the years, I’ve never-ever excelled beyond sucky. It’s really quite pathetic considering my mom’s a great artist and my dad makes surfboards. BUT, I’ve finally managed to execute a DIY project entirely on my own. (I usually require the immediate assistance of my BFF Anu, who has magical crafting hands – no joke) But BEHOLD the first DIY I can actually do – BY MYSELF:

diy-t-shirt-scarf-long-hawaii

Finally! A DIY I can ACTUALLY Freaking Do!

These scarves seem to be taking off in the Hawaii fashion scene thanks in part to Wanko Wanko and the numerous DIY blogs out there sharing tips and tricks on how to turn an old t-shirt into something fashionable. Here’s a quick visual step-by-step courtesy of HelloGiggles.

diy-t-shirt-scarf

6 easy steps to a more stylish neck line! Image: hellogiggles.com

The scarves are actually the perfect answer to fashionable “winter” wear in Hawaii because they’re not too hot or bulky, but they still offer that sense of stylish coziness that comes with your favorite winter scarf. Plus, you can pretty much add anything from feathers, to broken earrings, gold chains and shells to your scarf depending on your mood. This was my first one, so I kept it simple and just doubled it up to add a slightly different look.

diy-t-shirt-scarf-double

Doubled up DIY T-Shirt Scarf = Cute. Orange on Orange = Not so cute. #FashionFauxPas!

Instead of reinventing the wheel, I figured I’d share this video tutorial for those of you who want in in the secret:

So have at it my fashionably fierce frugal fiends – see if you can make yourself a T-Shirt scarf!

FashiOrgasm: Giambattista Valli For Macy’s Impulse

Yes, you read that correctly. I titled this post, FashiOrgasm: Giambattista Valli For Macy’s Impulse, What on earth is a fashiOrgasm? It’s simple grammatical arithmetic:

{fashion + orgasm = fashiOrgasm: the extremely ecstatic and intensely invigorating feeling you get when you find an AMAZING piece of clothing, pair of shoes or handbag.}

Let’s first make it clear that I DID NOT coin the term (there I go again kopykatting - haha), but it was most definitely the first thing that came to mind upon my first glance of Italian designer Giambattista Valli’s collection at Macy’s Ala Moana. I mean, what the hell else does a animal print lover (especially leopard and cheetah) do when she finds herself face-to-face in a sartorial jungle of such:

giambattista-valli-for-macy's-black-cheetah-dress

This was my first Valli feline sighting at Macy's. $139 (image: Macys.com)

giambattista-valli-for-macy's-cheetah-leopard-dress

Cheetah-Leopard mix breed = Fiercest Feline in town. $99 (image: Macys.com)

Let’s get one thing straight, my love for animal prints is of course circumstantial and very much regulated to pieces that say fierce feline versus freakshow. Sometimes it’s a fine, fine line, but I’m often more than willing to take the risk. Case and point, I’m passing on Valli’s leopard jumpsuit:

giambattista-valli-for-macy's-leopard-jumpsuit

I speak for myself when I say I'd probably look less "fierce feline" and more "feline freakshow" in this jumpsuit. The model, on other hand, is working it. Price not available.(image: Macys.com)

But that’s not to say I don’t already own a cheetah print adult onsie – voila:

cheetah-h&m-romper-cheetah-dress

Considering both Dani and I were wearing animal print, we clearly took it upon ourselves to fully manifest our inner ferocity in every photo from that night. $PRICELESS.

*Side note: Thank you to Hoku for surprising me with that cheetah print adult onsie from H&M.

It’s important to note that Valli’s Macy’s Impulse collection is not just animal print. He also has some PHENOMENAL organza skirts, and a long dress TO DIE FOR, among other items.

I’m not going to list out the pieces in Giambattista Valli’s Collection for Macy’s Impulse, but you’re more than welcome to click here to check them out. Or you can brave the APEC2011 Hawaii traffic and head down to Macy’s Ala Moana to go on a {sort of} real-life sartorial safari. I’m dying to know if any of Valli’s pieces give you a fashiOrgasm. (Lauren Fonseca if you’re reading this, I KNOW which pieces will make you melt. Consult with me later to confirm my accuracy.)

Oh, and in case you’re wondering who the heck Giambattista Valli is, you can visit his website to see his work or his wikipedia for biographical facts.
