I Shopped Jason Wu For Target

That’s right, I woke up at the crack of dawn. Picked up my BFF Anu. And headed out to Target Kapolei to test my luck among the other crazies fiending for their share of the AMAZEBALLS Jason Wu for Target Collection! Here’s the 411:

I was lacking a good night’s rest because I was chaperoning teenagers until the wee hours (oh how I forgot the ridiculous levels of energy that 4 four – yes, 4 – teenager girls have). But I survived. And so did my closet after I let them raid it for items I could live without. So, after finally getting to bed around 1:30 am, you can imagine I wasn’t too thrilled about the 6:30 am wake up call I received from my BFF Lauren, making the most bizarre claim I’ve ever heard, “Malia, get up! Wika went to the zoo! It was $800, but he’s safe.” EXCEPT, it was 6:30 am on a Sunday and I was dead tired and clearly not in a fashionable state of mind. What she really said: “Malia, get up! Wika (her BF who lives in San Diego) went to Target and it was a zoo. He spent $800. He got everything just to be safe.”

Well, of course that’s what she said. Fast forward…..get up, brush teeth, wash face, get dressed, get in car, drive, pick up Anu, drive, get coffee, drive, arrive at Target…

As I turned into the parking lot, I immediately spotted Lauren’s car and pulled up alongside her (with my game face on). We simultaneously rolled down our windows, not to say good morning, but to rejoice, “NICE – we’re the first ones here!” (BTW: anyone not keen on what happened with Missoni for Target and thus the significance of arriving first, should read up here.) Lauren, Anu, myself and Lauren’s Dad, Uncle Jer-Bear, (I’ve already nominated him for uncle/dad of the year. I know you were about to tell me to send in his name) stayed in our cars watching cautiously for any “threats”. Of course once we saw the first woman plop down at one of the iconic red Target balls, we knew it was time – game on beezies.

Lauren and Anu claiming their place in line...at 7:30 am!

First of all, it wasn’t a Zoo. BUT, I can assure you that the 30 or so fiends standing in line were more than enough to clean out the 3-rack Jason Wu for Target section in minutes. Between the three of us girls, we snagged up about 25-30 pieces and bolted to the fitting rooms.

Fitting room pic!

I ended up with a handful of ADORABLE items including four tops and two dresses. Lauren and Anu also walked away with oodles of cute Michelle Obama-esque dresses, skirts and tops. Unfortunately none of us managed to score any of the purses. BUT, it’s ok because Wika (the one who went to the Zoo and spent $800) managed to do that for us before we even woke up. Wika, I never thought I’d say this, but, YOU ARE THE MAN.

More photos to come of the items I scored. In the meantime, why don’t you drool over Wika’s $800 Zoo bill.

Yes, Wika. Yes. #drooling

Jason Wu For Target (Caution: Extremely Drool-Worthy Content)

Wuuuu freaking huuuuuu! Jason Wu for Target is finally here – well, sort of. It’s just the look book (keep reading to find out when the collection hits stores), but it’s definitely enough to get me salivating over the uber cute dresses, tops, skirts and more that make up Wu’s to-die-for affordable collection for the Target. I mean c’mon, what don’t you NEED about this adorable outfit?

Jason-Wu-Target-Yellow-Top-Black-Skirt

What’s that song? “Black and yellow, black and yellow, black and yellow…” I’ll take it all!

Amazeballs right? And the best part is that his collection is priced between $19.99 and $59.99. Let’s keep in mind however that Hawaii is practically Mars, so shipping costs usually up our prices by $10, sometimes $20 bones (lamesauce). But considering the fact that an original Wu can set you back a couple G’s, the price difference is a cup-of-tea. And I love a nice tea, especially if I have a nice tea dress…

Jason-Wu-Target-Blue-Orange-Striped-Dress

Perfect for that Cup-Of-Tea!

But what about for after tea? You know, like when you have a movie date and you need a super cutey and comfy top? Well, duh…

Jason-Wu-Target-Striped-Top-Shorts

If you’re wearing this top, you’re pretty much instantly the most stylish, coolest, hippest, cutest person in the room.

Wow Wu, you’re good (does anyone else find the phrase, “wow, Wu” funny?). How about an outfit for my bi-monthly bitches who brunch followed by an afternoon at the mall? Whatda ya know…

Jason-Wu-Target-Floral-Dress

Who knew floral could look so edgy!

So basically Mr. Wu has it covered. I bet he’s a ninja too. At the very minimum it’s safe to say he’s a fashion-ninja, creating these gorg pieces for great prices. Seriously though, you could buy the entire Jason Wu for Target collection for less than the price of one piece in the Jason Wu Spring 2012 Collection.

FYI, the collection will land in Target stores on February 5th and if it’s anything like the Missoni for Target frenzy, it’ll be sold out (and listed on eBay) before you finish your morning latte. What does that mean? Come Sunday, February 5th, skip the caffeine and head straight to the nearest Target if you want to get you fashionable hands on some of these goods.

Ok, enough jibber-jabber. Let’s get to business and take a look at the rest of the AMAZEBALL pieces from the Jason Wu for Target collection…

T-Shirt Scarves: A DIY I Can Actually Do!

I’m not what you would call an artsy-crafty type of person. Crafty with words perhaps, but definitely not with things like paint, plaster, glass, glitter, glue, ribbon – you get it. Arts and crafts have never really been my thing and consequently never have DIY projects. Despite having tried numerous art projects and DIYs over the years, I’ve never-ever excelled beyond sucky. It’s really quite pathetic considering my mom’s a great artist and my dad makes surfboards. BUT, I’ve finally managed to execute a DIY project entirely on my own. (I usually require the immediate assistance of my BFF Anu, who has magical crafting hands – no joke) But BEHOLD the first DIY I can actually do – BY MYSELF:

diy-t-shirt-scarf-long-hawaii

Finally! A DIY I can ACTUALLY Freaking Do!

These scarves seem to be taking off in the Hawaii fashion scene thanks in part to Wanko Wanko and the numerous DIY blogs out there sharing tips and tricks on how to turn an old t-shirt into something fashionable. Here’s a quick visual step-by-step courtesy of HelloGiggles.

diy-t-shirt-scarf

6 easy steps to a more stylish neck line! Image: hellogiggles.com

The scarves are actually the perfect answer to fashionable “winter” wear in Hawaii because they’re not too hot or bulky, but they still offer that sense of stylish coziness that comes with your favorite winter scarf. Plus, you can pretty much add anything from feathers, to broken earrings, gold chains and shells to your scarf depending on your mood. This was my first one, so I kept it simple and just doubled it up to add a slightly different look.

Doubled up DIY T-Shirt Scarf = Cute. Orange on Orange = Not so cute. #FashionFauxPas!

Instead of reinventing the wheel, I figured I’d share this video tutorial for those of you who want in in the secret:

So have at it my fashionably fierce frugal fiends – see if you can make yourself a T-Shirt scarf!

WuHuuu – Jason Wu for Target!

On the heels of the recent Missoni Madness that Target subjected upon itself, the discount retailer recently revealed that it would be delivering another glorious designer collection from the fashion gods. This time, it’s Jason Wu.

For those of you unfamiliar with Wu, he just so happens to be a favorite designer of, geez I don’t know, MICHELLE OBAMA! In fact, she wore a Wu design for the Inaugural Ball – KIND OF A BIG DEAL for Mr. Wu, wouldn’t you say?

Wu’s collection for Target won’t launch until Spring 2012, but he was oh-so-kind (or perhaps cruel) as to create this short teaser video for all the fiends out there:

So basically now Wu and Target have us all on the edge of our seats, waiting for the lookbook to come out and launch the entire world (or perhaps maybe just the fashion fiend world) into utter chaos. JUST. LIKE. MISSONI. We can only hope that Wu’s entire collection for Target doesn’t end up on eBay.

Now we really don’t know what Wu will create to woo us over to Target (pun intended), but I can tell you now that I’m ABSOLUTELY loving some of the pieces in his 2012 Spring and Resort Collections:

I DON'T care what anyone says. I LOVE this absurdly voluminous PINK skirt. LOVE. (image: jasonwustudio.com)

I know what you’re thinking: That skirt is too big and too pink. I love it regardless. And if Wu sends some sort of adapted version of this to Target, it’s MINE. Because I love the Pink, I MUST also LOVE the Yellow:

Dear Target fashion gods, please let Jason Wu create something just like this next piece for his Target collection. I NEED this in my professional wear wardrobe. Love, Malia. P.S. Did I mention I NEED this?

This IS it for me. Jason Wu now OWNS my life. (image: jasonwustudio.com)

I honestly had to stop browsing the collections because I was about to add every damn piece into this post. I think you get the point: I’m ready for Jason Wu to hit “the Target” with his Spring 2012 Target Collection. This time I’ll be well prepared for the chaos that will likely ensue. Bring it, Target and Wu. Bring it.

Now let me ask you, do you think Jason Wu will woo as much of a fashion frenzy as  Missoni did in September?

70′s Fashion at the Honolulu Academy of Arts

The Honolulu Academy of Arts hosts a monthly event called ARTafterDARK, at which a bunch of (real) art enthusiasts and “art enthusiasts” (aka young people looking for a cool place to drink and meet other young people). So where does fashion come into play? Well, this month the Art Academy teamed up with Tori Richard to host a 70′s themed ARTafterDARK event! And what better way to celebrate the 70′s than to invite “art enthusiasts” to don their best 70′s inspired outfits.

As someone who LOVES fashion and LOVES dressing up, I OBVIOUSLY did not require any convincing to attend the event. In true fashion fiend style, I spent most of Friday afternoon visualizing my closet (I know you do this, everyone does this), determining which of my current pieces could serve as the ultimate sartorialist time-machine. After a few missteps in my visualization process (I kept drifting into the 80′s), it dawned on me that I really only had one suitable choice: CUSTO BARCELONA.

custo-barcelona-silk-dress

Because it's not the 70's without a peace sign...right? Please note the matching headband, which is ACTUALLY the belt for this dress. I had to skip the belt and rock the 70's headband with heart earrings. HAD TO.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Custo, you must, must, MUST check out his stuff. I wouldn’t say his pieces are for everyone, but they’re definitely the epitome of artistic expression on clothing. DEFINITELY. I own a handful of his pieces and each of them makes me feel like a real art / fashion enthusiast when I wear them.

I obviously didn’t go to this 70′s inspired event alone – I made it a date night with my BFF Lauren, who rocked none other than Missoni for Target (and a BCBG skirt):

missoni-for-target-blouse-stripes

The peace signs were out in full-force that night. Apparently so were the oversized glasses and headbands.

I must take a moment to bring attention to the AMAZING Missoni for Target Blouse that Lauren is wearing. About 15 minutes prior to taking this picture, Lauren, who just came back from a week in San Diego, pulled out that treasure from her pink Longchamp bag and exclaimed, “Malia, look at the surprise I got you!” I probably don’t need to tell you that I screamed and proceeded to hug her, then try on the shirt. But, yes, that’s what I did. Back to 70′s night…

While most people chose not to dress for the theme (IDIOTS!), Lauren and I did find some other attendees rocking the 70′s look:

70's-costumes

I ABSOLUTELY loved these girls. Please note the psychedelic jumpsuit on the right. On POINT.

70's-couple-costume-afros

Nothing says 70's like a couple of AFROS and a PEACE sign.

70's-disco-couple-costume

Here comes the DISCO!

70's-group-costumes

Peace signs, again. C'mon it's the 70's!

sonny-cher-70's-costumes

Of course Sonny and Cher were there. OF COURSE!

So while you think this is just all fun and games, it’s not. The 70′s are BACK. Really though, if you’ve kept up with the trends this year, then you’ll agree with me when I say flares, flows and floppy hats all made appearances in some of the 2011 collections. Exhibit A from Marc by Marc Jacobs:

marc-by-marc-jacobs-satin-shirt

Marc by Marc Jacobs bringing back the 70's with this Disco shirt and Wide-leg pangs. (image: marcjacobs.com)

Ok, ok, so the 70′s fashions at ARTafterDARK are far less subtle than the Marc by Marc outfit above, but it was a themed party so it’s only natural for attendees to over do it. Take my outfit for example, I love the 70′s inspired look of the dress, but when I actually wear it to work, the headband goes back to being a belt and the hoop heart earrings are switched out for white pearl studs. I still rock the over-sized glasses, but that’s mostly because I’m obsessed with them. So maybe the 70′s aren’t back in their entirety, but they’re certainly inspiring some delightfully fashionable pieces today.

Peace, Love, Aloha, 70′s.

Fashion Faux Pas Friday!

That’s right, it’s back! This time I’m not necessarily the culprit, but I did volunteer myself as the model (because who the heck else would I ask?)! This Friday’s Fashion Faux Pas is something that I see pretty often: sneakers and/or slippers with business attire.

missoni-bcbg-nike-sneakers-women

Excuse me while I go for a quick jog...or am I asking the photographer for a fist pound?

Ok, ok, so some women have sensitive feet, bad arches, bad backs, ingrown toenails and the list goes on. BUT, why wear amazing heels if they’re going to hideout under your desk all day? WHY? C’mon ladies, rock those heels and show off your sexy legs. Judge me if you like, but I just can’t stand sneakers unless of course they’re paired with some cute, sporty workout gear from Lululemon or perhaps a kickball jersey (because I’m a kickballer). Less mind boggling to me, but still a tad bit questionable are the slippers:

missoni-blouse-havaiana-slippers

The slippers aren't as bad, but still not my forte for business attire.

Why you ask, am I so irked by this? You see, I work in downtown Honolulu at a PR Firm that’s nearly all women (just one male, unless you count the creepy cut-out of David Bromstad that happens to be housed in my office). My job as a PR pro basically means this: 1) I’m busy as hell; 2) I get to go to cool events; 3) I often have to wake up at the most inappropriate hours to make sure clients don’t make fools of themselves on the morning news. (*Of special note: I woke up at 4:15 am this morning to meet a client for a morning show – OH.THE.JOY.) 4) My office is like a fashion show everyday because everyone (excluding David, who’s actually a piece of cardboard) dresses very fashionably – especially my boss.

Considering #4 above, it’s no wonder that when I step out of the fashion show office for lunch, I’m often taken back by the runway outfits that other professionals sometimes don. I understand the need for comfort, but in this particular case, I prefer to take my lunch in heels:

missoni-blouse-nine-west-bcbg

Now we're talking! Is it just me, or do the heels make my boobs look bigger? And why do I look so pissed? Maybe because my feet hurt? Oh, well. Beauty is pain, right?

And so, there you have it. Fashion Faux Pas Friday. These are just my thoughts, I’d love to hear yours. Are sneakers and/or slippers really a fashion faux pas?

On the model (don’t you love it!):
Glasses ~ Nordstrom BP
Blouse ~ Missoni for Target
Skirt ~ BCBG
Purse ~ Italian Leather (gift from my Italian BF. Love him for this, among other things)
Heels ~ Nine West
Slippers ~ Havaiana
Sneakers ~ Nike

She Wrecked The Vera Wang Wedding Dress

“I think you should just do it,” the groom’s deep and very convincing voice echoed throughout the house. “That other dress doesn’t look like a wedding dress.”

The rest of us stood there, silently holding back our screaming thoughts from actually manifesting themselves into what was left of our “day-after-our-bff’s-wedding” voices. (In other words, our raspy, hungover, I’m wearing my sunglasses inside voices.)

“Do it, do it, do it, DO IT SARA!” I thought.

“Save it, don’t do it. It’s a Vera Wang Wedding gown – VERA freaking WANG! YOU’VE GOT TO SAVE IT – FOREVER AND EVER.” I was being tormented by my inner fashionable thoughts. But I wasn’t alone. I looked around the room and all of my friends had these confused, anxious looks. Our eyes darted back and forth to Sara, then Rob, then to that soft, white “not a wedding dress dress” that Sara had on, then to the VERA WANG, then back to Sara.

Sara walked away. She didn’t say a word. She just disappeared into the bathroom. And when she came out, her new husband’s voice came rumbling from across the room, “she’s wearing THE DRESS.”

I think every person in a ten-mile radius let out a huge GASP followed by a, “NO WAY!”

“YES!” I screamed. “It’s the only way! I’m so happy you chose Vera! This is going to be AMAZING!” (And amazing it was!)

The other girls cheered with approval as Sara walked to meet her new husband at the water’s edge.

And we all ran out of the house to watch Sara wreck her gorgeous Vera Wang wedding dress:

And that’s the end of that. Can you believe she wore the beautiful, pink Vera Wang Wedding Dress in the ocean?

Could you have done it?

Throwback: Ladies of the 80′s

80s-dresses

Ok, so we are technically babies of the 80

Alright. First of all, it’s Friday, and you DESERVE a nice laugh. Second, it’s not what you think. We don’t ACTUALLY wear these out to the bars (but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened – wink, wink). I’m about to get deep, or as deep as fashion talk can go…

We’re so used to seeing what “IS” fashionable or what “SHOULD” be fashionable that we often forget what “WAS” fashionable. What I’m getting at is this: just because it isn’t HOT- FIRERY-FASHIONABLE today, doesn’t mean it never graced the pages of fashion magazines. Am I right? Or AM I RIGHT?!

And so, I leave you with a showcase of what “WAS” fashionable (or at least my best manifestation of what I think was fashionable) in the the decade in which I was brought into this glorious world. Blessed are the ladies of the 80′s, who rocked… glitz and glitter from head-to-toe, bows like nobody knows, and serious lace with style and grace (whoa, poet!). Enjoy some snapshots of 80′s Prom Night revisited in ’09:

pink-80s-dress-lace-puffy-sleeves

Some fashion is timeless..some ISN

80s-dresses-pink

We clearly got the PINK memo. CLEARLY.

80s-prom-dresses

Is that the Prom Queen? OMG, IT IS!

Why, you ask? Why NOT, I answer? There’s no better way to celebrate the birthday of a baby of the 80′s, than to revive 80′s Prom Night – and that we did! A special thanks to Savers and Goodwill for pretty much outfitting the entire prom that night. Who needs history books when you have places like Savers and Goodwill to teach you everything you need to know about what went down 30 years ago?

Like I said before…just because it isn’t fashionable NOW, doesn’t mean it wasn’t fashionable THEN. I’d love hear about some of your THEN fashion favorites, so please do share!

If you laughed a bit (or even just cracked a smile), then my job is done.

Aloha.

1 Wedding, 5 Dresses: I NEED Help!

hawaii-wedding-dresses

YES, you read correctly: 1 Wedding, 5 Dresses. But it’s not what you think. I’m not wearing 5 dresses to 1 wedding – I swear! I NEED to decide which of the 5 dresses to the right is the ONE I’ll wear for an outdoor wedding at Kualoa this Saturday. I love them all, so I’m going to NEED your help choosing! Keep reading to for the scoop on each of my choices and to vote for your favorite…

2011 has been the year of weddings. Or at least it has been for me. Not that I have any problem with attending weddings, it’s just that the stress of finding the right dress for each event is enough to make a bachelorette go CRAZY!! You fiends know exactly what I mean: FIRST you’re excited, thrilled in fact, that you get to shop for a (oftentimes inappropriately expensive) dress.THEN you come to the realization that you can’t find the perfect dress for the wedding. THEN you feel stupid because you’re not even the one getting married, so why is it such a big deal? And FINALLY, the fashion gods send you something so divine, you’re not sure if you should wear it to “this” wedding, OR “that” wedding, OR “the other” wedding in the fall, OR heck, to ALL three weddings!

Please tell me you’ve experienced this? PLEASE? Because if not, well then, I must have a very unique wedding wear complex. And let me tell you, the complex was in full effect this summer and remains in effect as I prep myself for the September 24th wedding of the ever so lovely (and calmest dang bride I’ve ever known) Sara Julia.

I don’t have a dress yet and the wedding is this weekend – FML. AND, I’m not going to shop for a new one (oh, but how I’d love to!) Lucky for me, I already have 5 UUBER cute dresses to choose from. *On a side note: I’m also helping with the wedding – Emcee and some day-of coordination, which means I need something that’s function meets fashion. Let’s break down my choices, then you tell me which dress you’d choose for Sara’s BIG DAY:

1) I call this dress I MUA because it’s the dress I wore to a Spring wedding at Kamehameha Schools Chapel. Keep in mind, Sara’s wedding will have some of the same guests that were at the Spring KS wedding. Would you do a double take or what?bcbg-one-shoulder-dress2) This peachy-keen number is one of my faves because of the color. I wore it to a FABULOUS July wedding and have no problem wearing it again. I LOVE it because it has pockets. I HATE it because it requires pasties and who actually likes wearing pasties?bcbg-rose-pleated-dress

3) Number three, oh number three, you were that divine gift from the fashion gods. I wore this to an August wedding. In one word, I’d say AMAZEBALLS. In two words I’d say, MY FAVORITE. In three words I’d say, PICK THIS DRESS. I’m not gonna lie, this dress has downsides: it gets hot, it requires fashion tape. BUT, look at it – don’t YOU want to wear it?

long-dress-maxi4) Ok, I know you’re thinking this next dress looks like a pareo, but I don’t care! I love it and I know that Hina, Anu, Lauren and Jules love it too or else they wouldn’t have all approved on it when I bought it with them! It’s actually for a mid-November wedding (in California), but I don’t want to wait that long before wearing it. What do you think – wait or wear?

bcbg-runway-dress5) Thanks to my BFF Lauren, who contributed this fluttering fashion find to the dress line-up! This adorable flutter-dress is not only super cute, but it’s also super comfortable. I know, I know – “beauty is pain,” but seriously, that DOES NOT always apply. Right now I’m loving this option (more than #3? Possibly), but I’m open to your opinions.flutter-h&m-dress

Here’s the deal: Tell me which dress you’d wear to an outdoor wedding at Kualoa. I’ll be taking suggestions all week. Your votes/comments/suggestions will help me make my final decision. Then, on Monday (or Tuesday, depending on the intensity of my weekend), I’ll update you with a post-wedding blog featuring the FABULOUS outfits worn by myself and other fashionable wedding guests. If we’re super-duper lucky, I’ll score a pic or two of the blushing bride and her, oh-my-god-i-love-her-dress wedding gown :)

Go on, tell me what you think!

Aloha.
